BEING CURIOUS

Learning how to learn begins with stoking a love for learning by encouraging a curious mindset that actively seeks to question and inquire into topics of interest.

Can a curious mindset be instilled? When was the last time you stopped to ask yourself how something works? Think of how a child marvels at how things work in the world, asking what is it made up of or why does it work that way? Generative learners are playful creators who use their senses as data collection tools for learning. They are constantly asking questions, running everyday experiments, learning from experience and challenging authority on their views.

Traditional formal education is an outdated concept. It focuses on memorization of theoretical knowledge that is assessed in a factory-like manner. This results in learners focusing on grades and not the process of learning itself. Assessment needs to determine whether learner’s understand how their mind learns, how it consumes, processes and extracts meaning from information and experiences.

In contrast, Proteans seek out opportunities to learn on their own outside of traditional educational programs. They don’t simply receive second-hand knowledge from books and believe everything they hear but go out and learn from observation in the real-world. They seek out gurus, learn through doing, learn from their mistakes whilst experimenting and reflecting to deepen learning experiences. They learn truth through themselves.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE IN LIFE?

One’s values determines one’s actions. What does your true self look like? What is most important to you and are you living out your values? What are you interested in, what motivates you? What makes you happiest? What are your core strengths and how do you learn best? Learning needs to be valued and not seen as a transaction.
